STILL THINK SMOG SHOPS ARE TOO RISKY, CONFUSING,
OR JUST NOT WORTH IT?
Here’s the truth: smog checks are required by law, recession-proof, and massively underexploited. That’s why students who learn the system secure predictable monthly income, while everyone else wastes time chasing risky businesses.
Myth
California is going all electric, so smog shops will disappear.
You need to have a smog tech license to become a shop owner.
You have to be a mechanic to own a smog shop.
You need tons of money upfront to open a shop.
Smog shops are high-risk — if people stop driving or the economy slows, the business collapses.
Customers are hard to find.
You can’t make serious money with just one shop.
It’s too complicated to get started — licenses, equipment, inspections… too much.
It’s stressful dealing with government requirements.
Reality
California tried mandating zero-emissions for all new cars by 2035, but that’s under serious threat. Trump and Congress used the Congressional Review Act to revoke the waivers that allowed CA to enforce those rules.
You can own and operate a smog shop without ever touching a car. Licensed technicians handle the tests — you run the business.
Absolutely not. Most of our students aren’t mechanics. This is a hands-off business model if set up correctly.
With financing options, lease negotiation strategies, and partnerships, most students start with far less than they think.
People still own their cars regardless of how much they drive — and those cars still require smog checks on schedule. Even during COVID shutdowns, when driving dropped, smog shops stayed open and payments kept flowing.
